Famous Paraguayan guitarist jams with CCFC sponsored child
A special meeting between a Grammy-nominated guitarist and student celebrates the power of music

Many of us have a passion and dream about meeting the person who represents it. That dream was realized for Diana who met and jammed with her inspiration, Berta Rojas, a three-time Grammy-nominated Paraguayan guitarist.
“I can’t explain the emotion I feel,” said Diana, her voice cracking upon meeting Rojas. “[I love] her simplicity and the passion she has when she plays the guitar.”
The 14-year-old’s original dream was to study ballet, but family resources were limited at home in Paraguay, where she lives with her grandparents, mother, aunt and brother. Instead, Diana was introduced to guitar classes offered at the local community centre Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC) contributed to building.
Motivated by her aunt who also plays guitar, the teen jumped at the opportunity. “I feel so happy, because this helps me a lot. I learned so much. I would not have been here without (the program). I was very shy, very closed, I hardly spoke to anyone," said Diana, describing how CCFC’s work has positively impacted her life. She even dreams of studying it at the CONAMU Conservatory in Asunción, Paraguay.
Rojas was excited to make a memory with the willing student. “Giving is the best way to receive,” she said, adding, "For me, Diana's life is marked by very difficult moments and some very beautiful opportunities."
A "Dream of Diana" video was presented at the annual fundraising gala held earlier this year by CCFC’s partner, Fundación Dequeni. The goal of the gala is to raise awareness about the importance of encouraging children and young people to realize their full potential through education. It’s a message CCFC is sharing with the more than 380 sponsored children and their families benefiting from its work in the area.
