Hope for Melku
A child’s future shines brightly after a critical operation
By Danielle Rosenblum, sponsor services manager
A 15-year-old boy in a Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC) supported community in Ethiopia can return to school with less weight on his shoulders – literally – following a life-changing operation earlier this month.
For many years, Melku had been suffering with hydrocephalus, a condition which caused his head to increase in size to accommodate for excess fluid around his brain. Despite trying several medications, none were successful in treating the boy’s illness. Eventually, he stopped attending school because his head became too heavy to hold up.
Through the efforts of CCFC sponsorship staff in Ethiopia and Canada, and thanks to the generous support of our donors, Melku was able to visit two different specialists who agreed that surgery would be the best option for the boy. Within a few short days, Melku was taken to the hospital for an operation to drain the fluid from his brain.
After a very successful surgery, Melku is now recovering at home and can return to school soon. He has a new lease on life and a future as bright as his smile.
