Ebola emergency downgraded
WHO announces Ebola is no longer an international concern
SWITZERLAND — Ebola no longer poses a public health emergency of international proportions, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
“The [UN-convened emergency] committee provided its view that Ebola transmission in West Africa no longer constitutes an extraordinary event, that the risk of international spread is now low and that countries currently have the capacity to respond rapidly to new virus emergences,” reads a statement from WHO.
WHO recommends high vigilance be maintained at a time when clusters of transmission are being limited.
More than 11,000 people have died from Ebola since the outbreak in 2013; more than 10,000 have recovered.
