A call to connect the world
UN advisor asks for mobile industry to create policies to unite international communities
BARCELONA, Spain — The mobile industry must unite to create policy frameworks and technical standards for the developing and developed world said David Nabarro, advisor to Ban Ki-moon, the UN’s secretary general.
He noted the importance of governments working with international communities to make this a reality. “Expand connectivity, lower barriers to access and ensure tools and applications are developed with vulnerable communities in mind,” he said at the Mobile World Summit in Barcelona, as noted by the UN News Centre.
Mobile technology positively impacts communities, creating jobs, improving education and promoting better health. “The digital divide remains a yawning gulf that leaves the poor, those living in rural areas, and a disproportionate number of women, stranded on the wrong side,” Nabarro said. “Mobiles do not merely contribute to development — they are an important dimension of development.” [http://www.un.org]
