A cherished moment
CCFC’s CEO shares highlights from a visit with his sponsored child in Ethiopia
By Mark Lukowski
Meet Habetamua (above), the six-year-old my wife and I sponsor, and visited this past weekend, while travelling through Ethiopia. Shy at first, she warmed up, happy to sit, colour and share her ambitions to become an airline pilot.
Of course, life hasn’t been easy for Habetamua, who’s already lost one parent. She lives in a small rented home with her mother who launders clothes in the community and sells soap for a living. It doesn’t seem like much, but the duo is exceedingly grateful for what they have. Sponsorship has given Habetamua — who’s thriving in Grade 2 — and other children in her community a better start at life.
The family is thankful for the Christmas and birthday gifts we’ve sent. Even as my wife, Angela, gives Habetamua a simple colouring book, the girl’s eyes dance with excitement. As we colour, she’s quick to ask me to follow her lead, just like my children used to years ago. It really hits close to home.
The visit was too short, but it was enough time to reaffirm the power of child sponsorship to my wife and I. We witnessed the difference CCFC is making in the lives of mother, daughter and an entire community. It was truly a powerful moment.
