What’s his life’s work?

John has held numerous senior administrative positions, such as director of Nephrology at McGill, dean of medicine at University of Toronto and dean-rector of Aga Khan University in Pakistan. He recently chaired a global committee on kidney diseases for the developing world and was president and scientific director of Toronto’s Gairdner Foundation, which celebrates health researchers through annual awards, including one named in John’s honour. The doctor holds Honorary Doctorate of Science degrees from the University of Manitoba and University of Toronto, and is a recipient of the Order of Canada and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. In 2012, he was inducted into The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.

What academic work set him up for success?

John received his MD from the University of Manitoba and his research training at the National Institutes of Health in Washington.

Interesting tidbit

John loves spending time with his wife, four children and eight grandchildren. He also enjoys sports (especially baseball), art, music and travelling to P.E.I. in the summer.
