How students and parents are reacting to the new school year

Sharing hopes and dreams for a new year of learning in Paraguay

By Rosanna Menchaca, communications manager, Paraguay

It’s back to the books for students in Paraguay as they kick off the 2017 school year. And, although there are challenges in infrastructure, materials and the quality of education, this time is met with enthusiasm for students, teachers and parents alike.

“I want to get good grades, learn and play at recess,” says Carlos (pictured below),10. Hugo, 13, has a more specific goal: “I'm going to try my best not to fail,” he says.

Outside the classroom, there’s conversation among parents who are part of the School Cooperation Association, which ensures students get a good education. “I hope this year can be better for our institution; that there will be unity and understanding of all teachers towards the group — that we work together,” says Mirna Florentín, a member of the group.

Another member jumps in to the discussion: “I hope the children have a good education — that they can take advantage of it, that parents can support their children more. From the teachers, I hope they can fulfill their work with responsibility; that they can work as a team,” says Christian Román.

Finally, parents, who give their best every day so their children can go to school, are supportive. “I hope everything goes well, that they can study and have good grades,” says Pastora Brítez, a mother of two schoolchildren.

Christian Children’s Fund of Canada works with FortaleSer, a local partner, in more than 30 schools from the districts of Caballero, Sapucai and Escobar. As part of our work, we conduct workshops with teachers and students, lead personal development activities for adolescents and prepare literacy booklets for students.
