Mary brings a wealth of senior experience in non-profit organizations, research, event management, volunteer management, communications, marketing, capital campaigns, fundraising and media relations.

She provides not-for-profit management solutions on corporate, commercial and international expansion plans to various clients, from small and medium enterprises to established multi-billion dollar corporations.

What academic work set her up for success?

Mary earned her master of laws at England’s Lancaster University, her honours business administration at the University of Toronto and her doctor of philosophy at King’s College at the University of London.

Heather Shapter

What’s her life’s work?

Heather’s non-profit and private-sector journey to end poverty through the empowerment of women and children has spanned five continents.

The executive director of Toronto’s Crossroads International has worked in Canada, Bangladesh and Haiti in various senior positons, including at CARE Canada, BRAC, Save the Children and Newfoundland’s Bluedrop Learning Networks. The latter was recognized by the Clinton Global Initiative for helping marginalized young people and women find fulfilling work.

Meanwhile, Heather has extensive experience running an international consulting practice focused on leadership development and organizational culture.

What academic work set her up for success?

The keen executive has a master of business administration from Queen's University in Ontario and a bachelor of arts from Memorial University in Newfoundland.

Heather lives with her two sons and husband, Gerry, in Toronto where she loves to follow pro sports, especially the Toronto Blue Jays.

Justin Pang

What’s his life’s work?

Justin leads the strategic partnerships team at Google Canada. In his role, he finds and grows new partnership opportunities, while strengthening executive relationships between Google and its' top partners, such as Shopify and Loblaw.

A senior member on Google's partnerships team since 2012, Justin spent more than six years in New York and London before moving home to Toronto in 2018. He’s also worked at the Clinton Foundation's Health Access Initiative where he oversaw global operations for 700+ employees across 25 countries.

Justin began his career as a management consultant at Deloitte Consulting and an auditor at PwC. One of his first clients was Christian Children’s Fund of Canada.

What academic work set him up for success?

Justin earned his master of business administration from the London Business School as well as his Chartered Public Accountant designation and a bachelor of commerce from the University of Toronto.

The avid runner — who’s completed seven marathons — has called three continents home. Today, he lives in Toronto with his wife, two kids and cat.

Vafa Akhavan

What’s his life’s work?

Vafa specializes in corporate leadership and management consulting, but has executive experience in seven industries and 16 countries.

The president and senior adviser at NueBridge — a global consultancy of operating executives serving corporate and private equity clients — was previously CEO of Forum Corporation consultancy in Boston and global vice-president of Information and Media, a segment of McGraw-Hill in New York.

Vafa is active in mentoring programs for young people, locally and internationally. He’s passionate about helping children access healthcare, education and equality and elevating the human condition.

What academic work set him up for success?

Vafa holds an honours bachelors of fine arts from Toronto’s York University and a master of business administration in global management from the University of Phoenix.

Vafa’s undergraduate degree is in film production. In fact, he won two awards for his thesis production.

Dr. Ben Chan

What’s his life’s work?

A leader in healthcare quality in Canada, Ben was the inaugural CEO of the Health Quality Councils of Saskatchewan and Ontario and was named Canada’s Outstanding Young Health Executive in 2006.

The doctor, whose current work focuses on low- and middle-income countries, is a consultant for the World Bank, WHO and foreign governments. His quality improvement projects in maternal and child health as well as primary care have spanned 15 nations and five continents.

In addition to teaching at the University of Toronto, he still pulls out his stethoscope occasionally to help at underserved rural hospitals.

What academic work set him up for success?

Ben earned his doctor of medicine designation from the University of Toronto, his master of public affairs at Harvard and his master of public administration from Princeton.

Interesting tidbit

The doctor is on a lifelong journey to master the six official UN languages. He’s fluent in English, French, near-fluent in Spanish and has used Russian, Arabic and Mandarin on official duties.
