Child Sponsorship Changes Lives

Sponsorship Gives a Child a Chance in Life

Karen Von Stackleberg and her daughter Daniela and son-in-law Brad, recently traveled over 7,000 miles from Winnipeg, Canada to Langano, Ethiopia. They embarked on this demanding journey to acquaint themselves with Chali - a girl whom they began sponsoring nine years ago. “I wanted to meet Chali, as I needed to see for myself how our help was improving her life,” says Karen Von Stackelberg.

Chali lives with her family in Langano. It is a drought ridden, desolate patch of land, approximately a five hour drive from Addis Ababa. She and her family live in mud huts with no furniture, no electricity and no water – in short, no comfort. “It had none of the amenities that we take for granted here,” recalls Mrs. Von Stackleberg.

Most Ethiopians believe that large families with many children provide financial security, specifically for older members. As a result, 47 percent of the population is under 15 years of age. Chali’s family is no exception – it has more than 20 people, the majority of whom are children. Chali is the only sponsored child. This sponsorship is crucial to the family, and has improved their lives significantly by building a house and latrine for them.

“Chali’s family was warm and welcoming,” remembers Mrs. Von Stackleberg. They organized a coffee ceremony, which is customary in Ethiopia. The patriarch of the family addressed the visitors via the translator, and thanked them sincerely for their generosity in sponsoring Chali. “The family embraced us as one of their own. I will never forget it,” says Mrs. Von Stackleberg.

Before their visit, Mrs. Von Stackleberg had a normal sponsorship relationship with Chali. She and her husband sent money which was used to build shelter and purchase necessities, and in return they received thank you letters from Chali. The visit helped the Stackelbergs to see the bigger picture – where CCFC programs, combined with their contributions, have given Chali a better future.

“I realized how important CCFC work is. It gives a child who lives in such terrible conditions a chance in life,” says Mrs. Von Stackleberg.
