Etobicoke Students Raise $10,000 to End Extreme Poverty in Africa

Etobicoke Cheque Presentation

Students at Etobicoke’s Mississauga Private School have raised over $10,000 to provide desperately needed farm equipment, animals and water for the Bill Proctor Children’s Centre in the community of Kutun in Ghana, Africa.

The students, from kindergarten to grade 12, participated in the school’s first-ever walk-a-thon held on May 18th, to raise money for children in Africa as well as to show support for School owner, Ms. Dianne Proctor, who lost her 42 year-old son, Bill Proctor, to a brain aneurism in 2006. “Their effort brought tears to my eyes and moved me deeply,” says Ms. Proctor. “I am so grateful and proud of them.”

Ms. Proctor chose to honour his memory with her vision to provide life saving provisions   to help break the cycle of extreme poverty for children and families in Africa.

Teenage students, Vivek Thareja, Ivneet Garcha and Cassandra Lanzino as well as Staff advisor, John Alonso, decided to organize a walk-a-thon and motivate the student body to join in this worthy cause. Parents of the ambitious students also showed their support by matching the donations collected from the walk-a-thon.

During the student’s graduation ceremony yesterday, a cheque for $10,000 was presented to Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC).

Through CCFC, critical needs will be met as the funds will purchase farm equipment, animals and water for the Bill Proctor Children’s Centre and will enable families in Ghana to provide for themselves. They will be able to start small home-based businesses, create a local clean drinking water supply and increase enrollment of children in school.

On behalf of the thousands of children living extreme poverty that we serve, CCFC thanks all the students, parents and leadership of Mississauga Private school.
