A Truly Critical Work Stoppage

In the face of a then-looming LCBO strike, thousands of Ontarians lined up for hours to purchase what could tally up as $60-million in alcohol (Sales Record Set Before Ontario Liquor-Stores Strike Averted - June 25), the largest single day of sales in the stores' history.

It is interesting what we choose to open our wallets for in one of the worst recessions since the Great Depression. Projections by the Rockefeller Foundation, adjusted for Canadian conditions, indicate that in this economy as many as 12,000 Canadian non-profits will go under - about one in five.

That's a work stoppage we should really be worried about.

Mark Lukowski
