Canadian Sponsored Children in Burkina Faso Safe Despite Unrest

Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC) is carefully monitoring the political, social, and economic unrest in Burkina Faso which began last Thursday in the capital, Ouagadougou.

Students, soldiers, businessmen and others unhappy with a list of issues such as rising food and fuel prices, unpaid housing allowances, and wages have staged public demonstrations and violence in the streets. The turmoil has spread to at least four cities.

Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore has since dissolved his government, hired a new prime minister, and imposed an overnight curfew on the capital.

“Although our staff in Burkina Faso have curtailed some travel due to the unrest, all the children and families in our programs are currently safe,” says Mark Lukowski, CEO, CCFC. “We continue to pray for peace in the affected cities as well as strength for the victims of violence.”

CCFC has worked in Burkina Faso since 1987, assisting more than 40,000 children and individuals in that country with clean water, nutrition, medical care, and education.
